Performance is physical. ALL performance is physical. Your entire body is employed when you perform.
Most performance techniques have a common theory: impulses rule. Yet social rules, psychological and physical hang-ups, and over-analysis squelch our physical impulses- impulses essential to performance; impulses essential to being absolutely present and engaged in the here and now; impulses that invite strong meaning. Any emotion you feel, anger, ardor, embarrassment, is felt IN THE BODY as it is recognized by the brain yet we adopt lifestyles that don’t honor presence in our bodies and the result is “performance from the head”. The rest of the body is forgotten about and what’s left is physical awkwardness, stilted and unnatural movement, false intention, and therefore, inauthentic acting.
We are going to explore the messages and meaning we put forth to the world/audiences by working with the physical body in time and space. To borrow a phrase: “we are going to kick against social norms and our own illusions.” Our bodies will be the material, time and space will be the place. We are going to exercise our impulses and learn to listen and express ourselves in a deeper way through group exercises and structured improvisations.
Our goal is to become more impulsive actors: to make meaning in a different kind of way.
Using Viewpoints, we will begin to find a physical freedom so that we can find impulsive freedom in performance and daily life. The Viewpoints (adopted and adapted by theatre artists Anne Bogart & Tina Landau) are nine elements of time and space. Those nine elements will be explored onstage through group exercises that include structured improvisations and the creation of short, original theatrical compositions all in an effort to deepen the theatrical experience.
