Sundays, 2-4:30 PM
July 9 to Aug 27, 2023
or
Tuesdays, 7-9:30 PM
June 13 to Aug 2, 2023
NO CLASS July 4 for Independence Day
Movie Makers Studios
5502 Turkey Farm Rd.
Durham, NC 27705
Class fee: $240 (8 classes)
Instructor: J Chachula
A well-grounded class in the art of improvisation. Although improv is commonly thought of as being about comedy, this is not a class about telling jokes or being clever. Instead, you'll be learning to trust your impulses and create cooperatively as we explore what it means to be human. That experience is part comedy, part tragedy, and a lot of fun.
Our class offers a well-grounded take on the art of improv. Well-grounded means we always give honest responses to behavior, and attention is continually directed onto the human being you're working with rather than on going into your head for ideas. Students move quickly beyond the basics of most improv classes into more traditional improvised scene work, although that work is deeper and more truthful than what you'll see on most improv stages.
For anyone who has had Meisner acting training, this class supports those underlying principles: really doing whatever it is you’re doing, putting your attention on your partner, and accepting and responding to what’s actually happening in the moment. You don't need Meisner training to take the class, though!
The class is also appropriate for artists of other disciplines, non-performers (such as writers), or anyone who has the desire to have some fun, break out of a rut and acquire some useful skills.
As in all Open Mind classes, you can expect a fun, challenging, positive, and supportive atmosphere.
Instructor: J Chachula
Class size is capped at 12 students.
