Acting the Monologue

Sept. 9 through Nov 4, 2014
Tuesdays, 7pm-10pm
Movie Makers, 5502 Turkey Farm Rd, Durham
Class fee: $225 (9 classes)
Instructor: Robin Monteith
Express yourself fully and honestly in Acting the Monologue. As actors auditioning for a play or film role, our goal is a complete, authentic, spontaneous performance. The process for developing a monologue is our focus. Each student emerges from the course with monologues ready for multiple situations.
Pieces that express you
Students are provided with samples of strong monologue choices. We explore the qualities of excellent comedic and dramatic monologues such as strong intention, relationship, character, and given circumstance. We also discuss pieces that have pitfalls and how to spot them. This work prepares you to explore and choose effective favorites.
Work with partners!
Students learn a Sanford Meisner-based approach to developing a monologue. Enriched with partner work, improvisation, and class support, this course prepares the new actor for first auditions. It gives experienced actors a fresh take on the preparation. Students will get to work with different partners. In addition, ensemble exercises and warm-ups create a lively and supportive group.
Creative Decisions
Everyone gets a chance to use tools that support their monologues such as movement, contrasting monologue choices, and introduction of themselves and their work. In class, each student gets to write an organic piece with a strong intention. Students also make creative decisions regarding monologue content, length, and editing when necessary. A session on tools such as headshot and resume is included.
Develop and bolster confidence and skills
Infused with the creativity and choices of the actor, this collaborative process builds confidence, skills, and experiences for performing in a variety of roles and auditions. Experiences in this course feed acting work in plays, films and auditions. It also supports the confidence and development of the individual artist.
Class size is capped at 10 students. The course is geared toward adults, but more mature younger students (At least 16 years old) are welcome with permission from the instructor.
