Welcome to The Flying Machine Theatre Studio website!

We offer professional and affordable acting training in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region of North Carolina. The school specializes in Meisner Technique and Improvisation training for both beginners and experienced performers. Private coaching and weekend workshops are also available.

The Theatre Studio is headed by Director J Chachula, who teaches Meisner Technique and Improvisation. Guest instructors are brought in periodically and plans are being made to offer a more diverse range of skills training including voice, movement, and audition workshops, led by industry professionals.

J Chachula co-founded The Flying Machine Theatre Company with Marta King in 1999 and is a professional teacher, actor, and director. He is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and received his Meisner training from Andy Rohrer and Larry Silverberg. He studied improvisation with The Transactors Improv Company and spent two years touring with the group.

He was last seen onstage in the role of the Stage Manager in the Justice Theater Project's Our Town. His most recent performance with Flying Machine was as Jody in Lonely Planet. Other roles include Tom in Dinner with Friends, the Librarian in Underneath the Lintel, Yadu'llah in A Dress for Mona, (for Drama Circle), Pip/Theo in Three Days of Rain, and Gene in Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight.

J has acted in and directed productions with On The Roof, Fallen Rose, Raleigh Ensemble Players, Temple Theater and Justice Theater Project, and has performed for
kids with Little Big, and Raleigh Little Theatre. He has managed, directed, written and acted for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ Nature Fun Theatre. He has two decades experience in the corporate world acting in industrial videos and, more recently, using live role-play to train management.

A New York native, he has lived in the Triangle since
1977. He lives in Raleigh with his wife and son.
