J co-founded Flying Machine with Marta King in 1999
and is a professional teacher, director and actor. He is a graduate
of The American
Academy of Dramatic Arts and received his Meisner
training from Andy Rohrer and Larry
Silverberg.
His last role with Flying Machine was as
Jody in Lonely Planet. Other roles include
Tom in Dinner with Friends, the Librarian
in Underneath the Lintel, Yadu'llah in A
Dress for Mona,
(for Drama Circle), Pip/Theo in Three
Days of Rain, and Gene in Things You Shouldn’t
Say Past Midnight.
Since moving to the Triangle in 1977, he has acted
in and directed productions with On The Roof, Fallen Rose, Raleigh
Ensemble Players, Temple Theater and Loveseat Theatre, and has performed
for kids with Little Big, Raleigh Little Theatre and the Museum
of Natural Sciences' Nature Fun Theatre.
He spent two years touring with Transactors
Improv Company. He lives in Raleigh with his wife,
Denise, and son, Ben.
Marta D. King
Co-founder, Board Secretary
Marta is the co-founder of Flying Machine as well
as a director, actor, choreographer and teacher.
She directed FMTC's inaugural show, The
Rainmaker, and more recently directed Red Herring
for the company's 2005-06 season.
Her most recent acting roles with FMTC were Karen
in Dinner with Friends, Mary in The Memory
of Water and Grace in Things You Shouldn't Say
Past Midnight. Favorite roles include Lorrette in Between
Daylight and Boonville; Lisa in Boys' Life;
and Hattie in Laundry and Bourbon. She assistant-directed
the American premier of Sam Shepard's Buried Child
in Hungary, which received the Silver Star Award.
She teaches drama at Powell GT Magnet School for
the Visual andPerforming Arts in Raleigh.
